Who We are and what we do

About

We are an inter-school group of students that advocate for effective policy to reduce carbon emissions and educate people on how to make a positive impact individually. Although student led, we are mentored by Chris Dolgos of Genesee Community Charter School, and Terry Smith of the Harley School.

Members

Members range from Middle school students to students attending college to parents and teachers.

Meetings

We meet every second Saturday of each month at varying locations. You can view our meetings on our Calendar.

*Until future notice, all meetings will be held on Zoom instead of at our two meeting places.

Projects

In 2016 we pushed for a plastic bag ban in Monroe County, but our progress was stalled when Governor Cuomo blocked a plastic bag fee in NYC. Despite this, in 2019 the plastic bag ban was signed.

Our current goal is for the creation of a Monroe County Climate Action Plan (CAP) that would outline how to become carbon neutral by 2050. We are looking to get at least 1000 signatures on a petition to the Monroe County Legislature to enact this legislation. We have talked with Justin Wilcox about the first draft of a CAP, and will be looking to get in touch with more representatives once our petition receives enough signatures. In December 2018, Benny and Liam Smith and Thomas Neumaier presented our plan for a CAP to the Monroe County Environmental Management Council (EMC), asking for support and for a recommendation from the councils members to their constituent towns.

Since 2017 RYCL has hosted a yearly, area-wide Youth Climate Summit with the goal of educating local youth on the problems with climate change, both globally and locally. The summits have had the focus of individual action and included presentations from Impact Earth, DreamBikes, Kimmy Romeo, Flower City Pickers and other local activists. We hope to put on our 4th annual summit sometime in April 2020.

2019 Environmental Innovation Award

In 2019 RYCL won the Seneca Park Zoo 2019 Environmental Innovation Award in the youth category. Here is a short video that you can watch to learn more about our organization and our award.
